Visit to Battery Terrill

Visit to Battery Terrill

On December 3rd, 2022, Alliance Board members and friends were graciously welcomed by Ambassador Oswaldo de Rivero, his wife, and members of his staff at the Peruvian Embassy residence in Forest Hills, DC.  The residence is on the grounds of the Civil War Battery Terrill.  Directly in front of the reidence,  significant earthen remains are still visible and relatively well preserved thanks to being located behind property gates.  The battery was adjacent to Fort Kearny (lost to residential development on nearby Garrison St./ 30th Place), and was a critical link in the Northern defenses, linking Forts Reno and DeRussy.  Hundreds of men camped and trained near Battery Terrill in 1861-65, with many called into action at the July 1864 Battle of Fort Stevens. Attendees were treated to a tour of the beautiful turn of the century residence and Peruvian hospitality.  It was a clear December day and attendees were able to experience the commanding hilltop position overlooking broad branch valley, flanked on the other side by the Battery to the Right of Broad Branch (also visited, with visible remains at Jocelyn & 29 St. NW).  The Alliance is deeply appreciative to the Peruvian Embassy for hosting our visit.
